The latest video to do the rounds on YouTube and millions of computers around the world involves a very important building block in human communication – baby-talk!

Sam and Ren McEntee were aged 17 months when their parents took a video of them excitedly nattering away to each other in their kitchen at home. The video has captured the hearts of millions around the world because of their seemingly adult mannerisms. Despite the fact that neither baby can utter a comprehensible single word, it appears that they both understand exactly what the other is trying to convey. Encouraging two-way communication in children is a fundamental part of speech and language development. Many speech and language therapists emphasise the importance of ‘special time’ – taking 10 minutes out every day to have a natter with your child. And as Sam and Ren prove – you don’t need to have words to be able to communicate. Although the video suggests that the two boys are able to understand exactly what the other is saying – or a kind of ‘twin language’ – this is not actually the case. Rather, the two are practicing their developing speech sounds and awareness of conversational turn-taking. These are some of the fundamental building blocks of language that every baby goes through – mimicking sounds, recognising that making these sounds can achieve something, and developing awareness about two-way communication. What is particularly heart-warming is that the boys are able to go through this process with each other, practice their speech and language development together…and are clearly having a great time doing so!

In the UK, speech and language therapy for children under the age of 5 is readily available, both on the NHS and with independent private practices such as Integrated Treatment Services. Research has consistently shown that if a child develops a speech and/or language difficulty, therapy will be of most benefit to them before they reach the age of 5. If you feel that your child may benefit from some speech and language input, I.T.S. could be of help. Contact Sarah Davis here: https://integratedtreatmentservices.co.uk/contact-us/enquiry/
