The world is evolving; children are beginning to use technology at a much earlier age. It is available at home, in the classroom and with the development of portable devices such as Ipads, Kindles and iPhones; children can access technology just about everywhere! As Speech and Language therapists it is important that we keep up with the technology and look for new ways to engage children in speech and language therapy, not just during our therapy sessions but at home also.

There are many apps out there designed to encourage children to practice their articulation of speech sounds! However, recently one app has been recommended to me over and over again. With all the discussion and interest around this app, I decided to download it and see for myself!

The app is the Articulation Station by Little Bee Speech and it was voted 2012 App of the Year.

Articulation Station allows clients to practice all speech sounds in all word positions at the single word, sentence and paragraph level.

The sounds are practiced through a range of games and activities, which means that in just a few minutes the client can practice all their target sounds a number of times in the exact contexts they are needing to be address in.

Pros:

  • The pictures are clear.
  • You can easily add your own images.
  • When the client has finished, the app enables you to save the recordings and play them back. This information can then be printed or emailed to your computer and be accessed later as an outcome measure.
  • It can record up 6 children in a group session.
  • It is a FUN app, which engages children.
  • It reduces the amount of paper needed both in therapy sessions and the amount of paper activities given to parents to take home and practise.

Cons:

As of yet there is nothing that I have found that I dislike about the app, it has recently been updated and so far is the best articulation app I have found on the market.

Cost: At £34.99 it is an affordable app for clinicians using it regularly. However, it is a little costly for parents to download if their child is only working on one or two key sounds. To overcome this, there is a free version on the app, which gives you one free sound and allows you to download individual sounds as you wish at £1.99 a time.
