The team have recently been seeking resources to help our children and young people on the autism spectrum understand emotions.
We have three successfu lfinds, that we think you should know about;

Space Place

A Lancashire animation studio has released a cartoon series and computer games especially for children on the autistic spectrum. The Space Place, made by Catalyst Video Ltd, features 12 computer-animated stories, focussing on the link between emotions and facial expression. A DVD ‘Fun and Games’ menu allows children to play four interactive games, and a CD ROM allows them to play ‘Spot the Face’, a 3D game for recognising emotions.
We hope to test some of these resources shortly, so look out for our review on our home page.

The Transporters

The Transporters was developed with the Autism Research Centre at Cambridge University. It uses animated vehicles with real human faces to help children transfer learning to real life.
The Transporters has been developed to help children with autism recognise emotions.
Research shows that after using the DVD for 4 weeks, most children with autism caught up with other children in their ability to recognise emotions.
15 fun five minute episodes, showing key emotions in context;
  • 30 entertaining interactive quizzes to reinforce and test understanding;
  • 36-page booklet for parents, teachers and carers explaining how to get the most out of The Transporters at home and at school.
  • Episodes and quizzes are designed to be enjoyed repeatedly. Children love to watch them again and again – and this helps them learn.
    We hope to test some of these resources shortly, so look out for our review on our home page.
