The Art and Science of Synthetic Speech

Is language art or science, or a bit of both? A road show celebrating alternative communication will be touring north England celebrating the coming together of science and art in communication. The celebration of technology used to enable communication will be expressed using exhibits from engineers, scientists, artists, poets and computer scientists.
The interactive road show is free and is making a tour in north England through Yorkshire and Humberside until 26th January 2013.
The scheme is supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and Arts Council England, as well as CREST ? the Creative Speech Technology Network. You can learn more about CREST here http://crestnetwork.org.uk/
Lee Ridley, “Lost Voice Guy” ,who is participating in the show, has become well known over the last year for being the only comedian in the UK to deliver his stand up over an alternative communication device. The main aim of the roadshows is to create public awareness and understanding of the benefits of speech-synthesis devices, and to encourage public engagement with future research aiming to develop these technologies further. It is estimated that more than 30,000 people in the UK could benefit from alternative communication devices.
