As schools, colleges and clinics begin to shut down around the world in response to the COVID-19 crisis, administrators are frantically trying to come up with alternative solutions. Virtual platforms are rapidly replacing classrooms. Many parents, teachers and therapists who aren’t familiar with these practices will find this shift to be daunting and understandably so! Undoubtedly there will be some limitations to this new model of support (families who don’t have access to a computer at home and/or are technophobic will especially feel this). But there are still benefits to getting support, like SaLT, online!

Benefits to teletherapy

Greater flexibility for all involved

Travel is not an option for many at this time. Not only does teletherapy mean your child can continue to receive therapeutic input, it also means the therapist has more flexibility to work around your busy schedules. This would be ideal for parents and carers who may have to combine work and childcare at home. For therapists alike, stereotypical hours might not be expected so long as contracted hours are delivered.

A motivating and versatile platform

You will have access to plenty of fun and engaging online resources. Most children are motivated to use technology, such as virtual games and ipads, so you will have little to no issues with engaging them. Virtual Speech Center has lots of brilliant apps available. Downloadable colour resources and powerpoints can also be accessed on sites such as Twinkl who are temporarily offering their services free to schools.

Parents can be more involved

As mentioned earlier, more scheduling options means both children and families can meet with their online therapist at a time that suits them. The online system makes communication between families and therapists easier and parents can see the whole process, such as what strategies are used, the progress being made and all the fun their children are having!

During these uncertain times our speech and language therapists can be accessed online. Please contact us on 0845 838 292 or info@integratedtreatments.co.uk if you would like more information on accessing our online services.
