Understanding the Approach

What Is Colourful Semantics?

Colourful Semantics is a speech and language therapy intervention that uses colour coding to break down the different parts of a sentence and make their meaning more visible.

Children work through the Colourful Semantics programme to develop their ability to create sentences. The approach begins with sorting and recognising colours before progressing towards an understanding of the different parts that make up a sentence.

The overall aim is to support children to produce sentences that are both grammatically correct and informative.

Colourful Semantics can support:

Spoken sentence development
Answering WH questions
Use of nouns, verbs and prepositions
Use of adjectives
Storytelling skills
Written sentence development
Language comprehension
Grammatical understanding
Building a Sentence

The Four Key Levels

The initial levels use four colour-coded questions to help children understand who is involved, what is happening, what is affected and where the action takes place.

Level 1 · Orange

Who?

The dog

Identifies the subject of the sentence.

Level 2 · Yellow

What Doing?

Is playing with

Identifies the verb or action.

Level 3 · Green

What?

The ball

Identifies the object of the sentence.

Level 4 · Blue

Where?

In the garden

Identifies the location.

Colourful Semantics Resources

Explore our range of downloadable resources created to accompany Colourful Semantics training and support practical implementation.

Our resources have been designed by our team of Speech and Language Therapists, with many organised around popular topics and curriculum themes used throughout the school year.

Bring Colourful Semantics into Your School

ITS can place a therapist trained in Colourful Semantics within your school to establish whole-class approaches, small-group programmes and individual support.

We also offer remote support sessions to help schools create programmes and resources, implement targets and establish measurable goals.

On-site training is also available for teachers and teaching assistants who want to use Colourful Semantics confidently and consistently.
