What Is Colourful Semantics?
Colourful Semantics is a speech and language therapy intervention that uses colour coding to break down the different parts of a sentence and make their meaning more visible.
Children work through the Colourful Semantics programme to develop their ability to create sentences. The approach begins with sorting and recognising colours before progressing towards an understanding of the different parts that make up a sentence.
The overall aim is to support children to produce sentences that are both grammatically correct and informative.
Colourful Semantics can support:
The Four Key Levels
The initial levels use four colour-coded questions to help children understand who is involved, what is happening, what is affected and where the action takes place.
Who?
The dog
Identifies the subject of the sentence.
What Doing?
Is playing with
Identifies the verb or action.
What?
The ball
Identifies the object of the sentence.
Where?
In the garden
Identifies the location.
